The Federal Government is planning a big move for wheat farmers. Minister of Agriculture, Abubakar Kyari, said the government will give half off – a 50% subsidy – to wheat farmers very soon. This is to make sure there is a lot of wheat in the country.
What Did Kyari Say?
News came from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). Kyari talked about this after seeing wheat seeds in Kano. He said:
“Our goal is to grow a lot of wheat. We want it for people here and also to sell to other countries.”
President Tinubu also has plans. He wants to make sure there is enough food in Nigeria. He is looking at wheat farming, especially when the weather is dry.
Wheat Farming in Jigawa
Kyari traveled to two places: Kano and Jigawa. He wanted to see how seeds grow. He was happy with what he saw. Farmers in Jigawa are working hard. They use 40,000 hectares of land for wheat. The Federal Government has a bigger plan. They want to use 70,000 hectares this year.
Kyari explained more:
“We checked the seeds carefully. We have a good plan. We want to stop buying wheat from other countries by next year. Buying wheat takes a lot of our money.”
Government’s Big Plan for Food
The main goal is clear. The Federal Government wants to make sure there’s enough food. They don’t want to buy seeds from other countries. Kyari said:
“In 4-5 years, Nigeria will not need to buy wheat seeds. We will grow all we need. This will make sure we have enough food.”
Kyari also visited some important places. These include the National Wheat Council Warehouses in Sharada. He also went to AA Albasu Grains Company and Alyumna Seeds Production Company.
